Commodus (AD 177-192). AE as 26 mm. 11.1 gm. Two Obverses Series. Obv: M ANTONINVS-COMMODVS AVG, laureate head right, drapery on left shoulder. An unpublished type that appears to fit into the “two obverses” series of AD 179-180. A feature of the two obverses series is identical or near identical portraits on both obverse and reverse, but this coin seems to feature a middle-aged portrait of father Marcus Aurelius on the obverse and a young bust of the son and new Augustus, Commodus, on the reverse.
