Libius Severus (AD 461 – 465). Ae 9. Extremely Rare.
Libius Severus (AD 461 – 465). Ae 9 mm. 1.1 gm. Military mint. Obv: D N LIB SEVERVS P F AVG. Diademed and draped bust right. Rev: Monogram of Ricimer, RCME. RIC 2716-7. Extremely Rare. In November AD 461, Ricimer proclaimed Libius Severus emperor at Ravenna. Little is known of Libius, also known as Severus III, a native of Lucania. Historians consider him as a puppet ruler, as evidenced by nummi such as this one with Ricimer’s monogram on the reverse. Libius Severus died in 465, presumably of natural causes, a remarkable achievement during the final years of the Western Roman empire.
